The Chronograph That Won't Reset to Zero
You press the reset pusher and the chronograph seconds hand lands just past twelve. Not dramatically — a hair's width. Every time.
Or the minute counter parks between markers. Or the reset needs a firmer press than it used to. Or it doesn't reset at all.
These look like the same problem. They're three different problems with three different fixes and three very different price tags — and one of them is a cascade failure where the early warning sign is that the pusher needs a firmer press. If you catch it there, it's cheap. If you keep pressing harder, it isn't.
The problem, in three flavours
(a) The 7734 cascade — the reason "press harder" is bad advice
This one affects the Valjoux 7734 in the Tudor Oysterdate chronographs 7031/0 and 7032/0 — the "Home Plate" watches from 1970.
It starts small. The flyback lever spring (part 8180) goes slightly out of shape. That's it. A spring, slightly bent.
But that spring is what lets the hammer operate properly, so now the chronograph doesn't stop and reset cleanly. And the owner's entirely reasonable response is to press harder.
Here's the documented chain from an actual repair:
- Flyback lever spring out of shape → hammer can't operate properly
- → chronograph won't stop/reset cleanly
- → owner applies escalating force to the pushers
- → the screw hole in the chronograph operating lever (part 8140) elongates
- → its securing screws break
- → the locator on the chronograph mechanism plate (part 8281) wears
A bent spring became four broken components, and every step was caused by the owner trying to make the watch work.
The early warning is one sentence: "the reset needs a firm press." That is the moment to act. Not when it stops working.
(b) Hammer and heart-piece adjustment
This is the classic reset-to-zero fault, and it applies across the whole family — vintage Valjoux, modern ETA 7750, and in principle any chronograph.
On reset, a hammer swings in and presses against a heart-shaped cam on the chronograph wheel. The cam's shape forces the wheel to rotate to exactly one position — zero — and the hammer holds it there. If the hammer-to-heart relationship is slightly off, the hand parks slightly off zero, consistently, every time.
The diagnostic on the bench is to view from the side looking for gaps, and to nudge the wheel with a toothpick during reset to check it's genuinely locked rather than just approximately parked.
This is the good version of the problem. It's an adjustment, it's relatively minor, and it doesn't get worse quickly.
(c) The oscillating pinion — the 7750's known fragile part
The oscillating pinion is the component that couples the chronograph to the running movement. It is the acknowledged weak point of the 7750 family, and the risk profile is unusual: it very rarely fails on your wrist.
It breaks during service. "The oscillating pinion gets broken when it is not seated properly and you screw the plate over without aligning other pivots." Even the reference 7750 service walkthrough on Watch Repair Talk has a moderator saying "the only part I struggle with is the oscillating pinion."
The same walkthrough flags two more breakage traps in the same movement: a fine spring pressed into the date platform plate that's easily damaged on removal, and the hour-counting wheel, which can be damaged when removing the hour hammer.
What this means for you as an owner: the practical risk on a Tudor 7750 chronograph isn't that it fails. It's that a watchmaker unfamiliar with the calibre breaks something while servicing it. Choose someone who has done 7750s. Ask directly.
How to self-test
The reset consistency test
- Start the chronograph. Run it 10 seconds. Stop. Reset.
- Look straight down through the crystal — not at an angle. Parallax fools almost everyone here.
- Repeat after running for 30 seconds, 5 minutes, and 45 minutes.
What the pattern tells you:

That fourth row is worth dwelling on. A minute counter that jumps to 1 on start was diagnosed on the forums as improper adjustment of the sliding gear, with the expert verdict: "I would not expect this to randomly go out of adjustment." If you see this on a recently serviced Home Plate or Big Block, the problem is the watchmaker, not the watch. Take it back.
The pusher feel test — and the Black Bay Chrono exception
Press each pusher and pay attention to the resistance.
On a vintage Valjoux (7734, 234, 7750): the cam-actuated chronographs have inherently stiff pusher action. Gear Patrol describes the 7750 as "characterized by its rather stiff pusher action." A slight backlash or jump of the chronograph seconds hand on engagement is normal for a lateral-clutch cam design. None of that is a fault.
On the Black Bay Chrono (MT5813): the pushers screw down. WatchTime's tester needed to "release the pushers from their secure seats" and then found starting the chronograph took "a remarkable amount of effort to overcome stiff resistance." Stop, restart and reset were "much smoother," with reset having "a very precise pressure point."
So on a BB Chrono, heavy start action is expected behaviour. What isn't normal: a sloppy or mushy pusher, or one that operates with the collar still screwed down.
One misreading to rule out on the BB Chrono
The counter at 3 o'clock on the Black Bay Chrono is a 45-minute register, not the more usual 30. Tudor changed it deliberately from the Breitling B01 base it's derived from. A number of "my counter is reading wrong" reports are simply owners counting against the wrong scale.
The solution
Black Bay Chrono (MT5813)
Warranty claim. There's a documented case of an owner whose chronograph minute counter reset to the 1-minute mark instead of zero, appearing within the first month. Forum consensus was blunt and correct: "a warranty job not a service tweak." His AD sent it to Rolex Service Center Dallas, it came back correct in about a month, no charge.
There's no evidence of a batch pattern here — these appear to be individual faults. But they're squarely warranty faults, and Tudor's guarantee is five years on anything sold since 2020.
Worth adding for balance: the MT5813 is a genuinely excellent movement. WatchTime measured it at +2.9 to +3.5 s/day with only 2.3–2.9 seconds of positional spread and amplitude of 280–288° flat. Column wheel, vertical clutch, 41 jewels, 70-hour reserve. It's a Breitling B01 derivative built by Breitling for Tudor as part of a barter — Tudor supplies Breitling with MT56 calibres in return.
Vintage Valjoux (7734, 234, 7750)
The parts situation is better than you'd fear. The 7730, 7733, 7734, 7736 and 7737 share many components, and individual parts circulate on the open market — the minute-counter jumper spring, the operating lever, and so on. Ebauches SA published a combined 7733/7734/7736 technical and service manual that's still findable.
The Valjoux 234 in the Monte Carlo shares parts with the 236 and 730 and the wider Valjoux 23/72 family, which had an exceptionally long production run across dozens of brands. Donor material exists.
Movement parts are not the bottleneck on a vintage Tudor chronograph. Case parts, bezel inserts, bracelet endpieces and dials are — but that's a different post.
Find someone who's done the calibre. Given that the biggest risk on these is service-induced damage, this matters more than price. Ask directly: "have you serviced a 7734 / a 7750 before?"
Heritage Chrono and Grantour Fly-Back
If you own one of these you have a different animal entirely — an ETA 2892-A2 with a Dubois Dépraz module bolted on top, not an integrated chronograph. The failure modes and the service economics are different enough to deserve their own post, which is next in this series.
Two operating rules that prevent most of this
Stop the chronograph before you reset it. Don't hit reset while it's running. On the modular Tudor chronographs this is explicit damage-avoidance guidance, not a preference.
Don't leave the chronograph running as a permanent seconds hand. It's a common habit on Big Blocks and Tiger Princes, and it's costly. Engaging the chronograph loads the going train through the oscillating pinion — amplitude drops measurably, power reserve shortens, and you're accelerating wear on precisely the components that are hardest to replace and most likely to break during repair.
