| Symptom | Why it is urgent |

| Water or condensation inside the case | Corrosion starts within hours. Pull the crown out to stop and vent it. |
| Grinding or crunching while winding | Metal on metal. Every turn creates more damage and more debris. |
| Metallic scraping or a loose-object rattle | A loose rotor, screw or detached part is circulating inside a lubricated mechanism. |
| Crown will not screw down, or spins freely | Zero water resistance now, and forcing it destroys more thread with each attempt. |
| Hands stopping and restarting, or the seconds hand stuttering or jumping backwards | An escapement, train or hairspring fault — or debris. |
| Hands touching each other, or a hand visibly loose | It will jam the movement, and a loose hand can wreck the dial. |
| Chronograph will not reset, or a pusher stays depressed | The coupling is under load. Continuing can bend the hammer or heart piece. |
| Stops in one position but runs in another | Marginal amplitude or a physical obstruction. |
| Power reserve collapse — 70 hours down to 20 | Mainspring, barrel, or major friction. |
| Visible rust or spotting on the dial, hands, or through the caseback | Active corrosion. |
| Chipped or cracked crystal | Water resistance is gone, and cracks propagate. |
| The dive bezel now rotates clockwise | The click spring has failed. This is a dive safety defect and a valid warranty claim. |
| Immediately after a hard drop | Check for a broken balance staff, displaced hairspring or cracked jewel. Cheap to check, expensive to ignore. |
| A fast rate that returns after two proper demagnetising cycles | It was never magnetism. Something is mechanically wrong. |
