The Crown You're About to Strip
Cross-threading the crown is the most common expensive damage owners inflict on their own watches. It happens in about two seconds, it usually happens to someone in a hurry, and it leaves the watch with no water resistance until it's repaired.
It is also completely avoidable with one technique that takes half a second longer than what you're doing now.
The problem
The crown screws into a threaded tube that passes through the case wall. Both sets of threads are fine, precise, and made of relatively soft metal.
When you press the crown against the tube and immediately start turning clockwise, the threads have to happen to be aligned for it to engage cleanly. Often they aren't. So the crown's thread rides up over the tube's thread at an angle and, if you keep turning, cuts a new path across it.
That's cross-threading. It destroys the tube thread, the crown thread, or both. And the tube is the part that goes through the case, so replacing it isn't a five-minute job.
The maddening part is that the watch usually feels like it's tightening. There's resistance, so you assume you're making progress. The resistance is the metal being destroyed.
The solution — the whole post in one paragraph
Press the crown firmly inward against the tube. Then turn it COUNTER-clockwise first, until you feel or hear a small click as the threads drop into alignment. Only then turn clockwise. It should catch immediately, with zero resistance, and run down smoothly to a flush, square seat.
That counter-clockwise half-turn lets the crown's thread start find the tube's thread start, exactly the way it's supposed to. It's the same technique you'd use on a camera lens or an oil filter, and for the same reason.
If the crown doesn't catch within a fraction of a turn: stop, back off completely, and start again.
Never force it. There is no situation where a screw-down crown requires force to engage. If it needs force, the threads aren't aligned, and every additional degree of rotation is doing damage.
How to self-test: the five-minute crown audit
Worth doing once a year, and immediately after any hard knock near the crown.
Step 1 — Unscrew. Turn counter-clockwise, counting the turns. Typically two to three. It should be smooth and even the whole way. When it disengages, the crown should pop out slightly under spring pressure.
Step 2 — Hand-wind (crown fully pushed in, position 0). Turn clockwise slowly, about 20 turns.
- Normal: a fine, even, high-frequency ratcheting "purr." Uniform resistance throughout. No crunch, no catches, no dead spots.
- Abnormal: a gritty or sandy feel; a coarse crunch; a rhythmic catch once per crown revolution; sudden free-spinning; or resistance that varies as you go.
Step 3 — Pull to position 1 (date / quickset). The detent should be crisp and positive, and the crown should stay put. Turn it: the date should advance with a defined step. (Move the hands to mid-morning first — see the date danger zone post.)
Step 4 — Pull to position 2 (time-setting). Another positive detent. The seconds hand should hack on an MT calibre. Setting should be smooth both directions, with only a small, consistent amount of backlash.
Step 5 — Check for wobble. With the crown out, move it gently sideways. A tiny amount of play is normal. Visible wobble, or a crown that feels like it's pivoting on something, is not.
Step 6 — Screw it down using the counter-clockwise-first technique above. It should seat flush and square against the case.
Step 7 — Look at it. With the crown out, loupe the tube threads. With it screwed down, check there's no gap and no tilt.
Reading the results

Two of those deserve emphasis.
Grinding while winding is a red line. That is metal cutting metal inside the keyless works or the barrel. Each additional turn creates more damage and more debris circulating in a lubricated mechanism. Stop, and don't "just wind it enough to get through the week."
A crown that won't seat means the watch has zero water resistance right now — not degraded, none. Treat it that way until a watchmaker says otherwise.
Habits that prevent all of this
Wind off the wrist. Winding while the watch is strapped on side-loads the stem — you're pulling at an angle rather than turning cleanly. Take it off. It takes three seconds.
Never operate the crown with wet hands or underwater. Not on a Pelagos, not on anything. The 500 m rating assumes the crown is screwed down and sealed.
Rinse after seawater. Salt crystallises in the crown threads and the tube. Warm fresh running water, crown screwed down, rotating the bezel back and forth for thirty seconds. Then dry. That's the routine, not an optional extra.
Don't set the date at night. Different post, but it's the same crown and the same habit of rushing.
Slow down when the watch is wet or you're in a hurry. That's when cross-threading happens — coming out of the shower, getting changed, half-attending.
If it's already damaged
The repair is a case tube replacement, and probably a new crown. It's standard work — any competent watchmaker can do it — and it's not catastrophically expensive on its own.
What makes it expensive is what happened while it was cross-threaded. If the watch has been worn for weeks with a crown that wasn't sealing, you may also be paying for a movement that got wet. Which is why the audit above is worth doing before you notice a problem, not after.
Two things to ask for:
- Is the crown gasket being replaced as well as the tube? It's the weakest point in the whole water-resistance system.
- Is the watch being pressure tested afterwards, and to what depth? Tudor's own procedure ends with a vacuum test, a pressure test in water, and a condensation detection test. Anyone touching your case should be doing something equivalent.
The one thing to remember
Counter-clockwise first.
That's it. It's the difference between a crown that lasts the life of the watch and one you're paying to replace.
