The Hands Stopped But the Seconds Hand Kept Going
This one is strange enough that owners often assume they're imagining it.
You glance at your Tudor and the time is wrong — an hour out, or twenty minutes out. But the seconds hand is sweeping along perfectly normally. The watch clearly hasn't stopped. It's running. It's just... not showing the right time anymore, and getting steadily worse.
Or a milder version: you set the time, and an hour later it's drifted. You set it again. It drifts again.
The movement is fine. What's failed is the little friction clutch that connects the running movement to the hands you can see.
The problem
There's a component in every mechanical watch called the cannon pinion. Its job is deceptively clever: it has to be firmly enough attached to the going train that the train drives it around, but loosely enough that you can override it with the crown when you set the time. It's a deliberate slipping clutch.
On most movements it's a simple friction fit — a tube pressed onto an arbor with a controlled amount of grip.
The ETA 2824-2 does it differently. It uses a cannon pinion with an integrated driving wheel (component #242, ETA part 31.083.00) that relies on a friction grip between two surfaces. Watchmakers who work on these regularly describe the 2824's arrangement as particularly susceptible to losing that grip — more so than a conventional design.
When the friction degrades, the going train keeps turning exactly as it should. The seconds hand, which is driven separately and directly, keeps sweeping. But the hour and minute hands are no longer being reliably dragged along with it. They lag. They stall. They stop.
The same architecture is in the ETA 2834-2 in the Prince Date-Day, so everything here applies there too.
How to self-test
Test 1 — The obvious one
Set the watch precisely and leave it alone for a day.
Check it against time.is the next day.
- Seconds hand aligned correctly but hour and minute hands out by minutes or hours → cannon pinion.
- Everything out by the same amount → that's a rate problem, not this. Different post entirely.
The distinguishing feature is that the relationship between the hands has broken, not that the whole display is running fast or slow.
Test 2 — The feel test
This is the one watchmakers use, and you can do it yourself.
Pull the crown out to the time-setting position and move the minute hand clockwise, then counter-clockwise, paying attention to the resistance.
- Normal: consistent, even resistance in both directions. It feels like moving something that's engaged.
- Abnormal: the minute hand feels noticeably loose or free when moved counter-clockwise but not clockwise. That asymmetry is a documented tell for lost cannon-pinion friction.
Also watch for hands that won't stay set — you position them exactly, push the crown home, and they've shifted. A small nudge when pushing the crown in is normal gear clearance and not a defect. A hand that visibly settles or drifts afterwards is not.
Test 3 — Rule out the impostors
Two other things produce vaguely similar symptoms and are worth eliminating first:
Hands touching each other. If the hour and minute hands are fitted at slightly wrong heights or one is bent, they'll catch each other as they pass — typically once an hour, or at one specific point on the dial. Look straight down through the crystal (not at an angle) and watch the hands cross. If you can see one dragging the other, stop wearing the watch — that's a different and more urgent problem.
A hand fouling the dial or crystal. If the watch stops at roughly the same point each cycle and restarts with a tap, something is physically catching. Again, stop wearing it.
Neither of those is a cannon pinion. Both need a watchmaker sooner.
The solution
Replace the cannon pinion. That's it.
It's a cheap part, it's a current-production ETA component available from any parts supplier, and fitting it is routine work for any competent watchmaker. There is no exotic tooling and no Rolex parts account required.
The one thing to be aware of: the correct friction is set by the watchmaker, not fixed by the part. A new cannon pinion has to be tightened to the right amount of grip — enough to be driven reliably, loose enough to set the time without straining anything. Too tight and you're putting load on the motion works every time you set the watch. Too loose and you'll be back in six months.
So it's a small job that rewards someone who's done it before.
If it's happening on a watch that was recently serviced, mention that. A cannon pinion that was disturbed and not correctly re-tightened during reassembly is a plausible cause, and it's a warranty conversation with whoever did the work.
Why you shouldn't ignore it
It's tempting to just reset the watch every morning and carry on. Two reasons not to:
It gets worse. The friction surfaces don't recover. What starts as a few minutes' drift a day becomes hours, and eventually the hands stop being driven at all.
You'll set the watch more, which is where damage actually happens. Every extra trip through the keyless works, every extra date correction to catch up — that's wear on components that are more annoying to replace than the cannon pinion is.
It's also worth saying: this is a nuisance fault, not a dangerous one. Nothing is grinding, nothing is shedding metal into the movement. You can keep wearing the watch while you arrange a fix. Just don't leave it a year.
What to tell your watchmaker
"The seconds hand runs normally but the hour and minute hands lose time. The minute hand feels loose counter-clockwise. I think it's the cannon pinion — can you check the friction and replace it if needed?"
Short, specific, and it names a part they can order for a few pounds.
