The Spinning Rotor: Why Your Tudor Won't Hold a Charge

This is the best-documented mechanical fault in Tudor's entire history, it affects watches from the 1960s to 2016, and it announces itself with a test that takes about ten seconds.

The symptom owners actually notice is boring: the watch stops. Not dramatically — it just quietly runs out of energy sooner than it should. You wear it all day, take it off Friday evening, and it's dead by Saturday afternoon when it should have gone until Sunday. Wind it up and it runs beautifully. Wear it again and the same thing happens.

Most people conclude the mainspring is tired, or that they don't move around enough. Usually it's neither.


The problem

Your watch has two ways of winding: the crown, and the rotor — that semicircular weight swinging around inside as you move.

The rotor swings both ways, but the mainspring only winds one way. Something has to convert "spinning in either direction" into "always winding in the right direction." In the ETA 2824-2 and its relatives, that job belongs to a pair of reversing wheels — tiny components containing sprung pawls that grip in one direction and slip in the other.

Those pawls are microscopic and they live on a whisper of oil. Over time, one of two things happens:

The oil oxidises and turns sticky. The pawls stop releasing cleanly. Instead of gripping and driving the mainspring, they smear.

The pawls wear. They stop gripping properly at all, so the rotor's energy goes nowhere.

Either way, the rotor keeps swinging happily. It just isn't winding your watch anymore.

Vintage watchmakers have a name for the visible version of this: rotor helicoptering.

There's a wrinkle worth knowing if you own a chronograph. The Valjoux 7750 — in the Big Block, the Tiger Woods Prince chronographs, the Chronautic — winds in one direction only and pushes everything through a single reversing wheel (part #1488). It's inherently less efficient than a 2824 even when perfectly healthy. So a desk-bound 7750 owner can see genuinely poor winding that isn't a fault at all. That makes the test below more important, not less.


How to self-test

Test 1 — The ten-second version

Take the watch off. Unscrew the crown. Hand-wind it slowly, and watch the rotor.

On a healthy movement, the rotor sits completely still while you hand-wind. That's the whole test.

If the rotor spins, whirrs, or drifts round while you're turning the crown, your reversing wheels are the prime suspect. Watchmakers use this exact check on the bench. It's most obvious when the mainspring is close to unwound.

You may also hear it — a whirring or slightly scratchy noise during hand-winding that shouldn't be there.

Test 2 — Confirm it's not the mainspring

The spinning-rotor test tells you the winding system is suspect. This one rules out everything downstream of it.

  1. Let the watch run down completely. Confirm it's stopped.
  2. Unscrew the crown and hand-wind about 60 turns, slowly. You won't feel a hard stop — the slipping bridle inside the barrel disengages with a subtly smoother feel. You cannot overwind an automatic this way, so err high: under-winding is the single most common way this test goes wrong.
  3. Note the exact time. Set it dial-up somewhere it won't get bumped — not a desk you type at, not near a washing machine. Every disturbance turns the rotor and adds wind, which invalidates the test.
  4. Screw the crown back down.
  5. Measure how long it runs before stopping. Point an old phone at it recording a time-lapse if you want the stop time to the second.

Benchmarks: ETA has published both 38 and 42 hours for the 2824-2 over the years, so treat 38 as the floor. Anything under about 34 hours is suspect; comfortably into the high thirties and the mainspring and going train are fine. A 7750 is 44–48 hours.

The diagnostic split is the important part:

  • Manual reserve is fine, but the watch dies in real-world wear → the mainspring is healthy and the problem is in the winding module. Reversing wheels.
  • Manual reserve is also short → the problem is upstream. Different fault, different post.

Test 3 — The swirl test

If you want a third data point: let the watch run down completely, don't touch the crown, hold it flat in your palm and swirl it in a horizontal circle like swirling a wine glass, about two rotations per second.

A healthy automatic starts within a handful of swirls. Count 50 — it should be running. Continue to 200 total, then set it down dial-up and see how long it runs. Won't start after 100+ swirls, or starts but runs only minutes? The winding system isn't delivering.


The solution

This is a routine, inexpensive fix. It is not a reason to panic and it is not a sign your watch is failing.

The parts are cheap and publicly available. This is the single biggest practical advantage of an ETA-based Tudor over an in-house one. Genuine ETA reversing wheel #1488 sells for around $31 at Perrin. The auxiliary reverser, the reduction wheel, and the rotor bearing are all catalogued and stocked by Cousins UK, Gleave and others. Nobody has to beg Rolex for anything.

Clean-and-relube versus replace is a live debate. ETA and Sellita's factory doctrine is to replace reversers rather than clean them. Plenty of working watchmakers clean and re-lubricate them successfully and have done for decades. Both approaches are defensible — but the lubricant matters enormously.

The lubricant is where this goes wrong. The correct product is a Moebius 9504 / Lubeta V105-class treatment, not the general-purpose Moebius 9010 that gets used everywhere else. Get this wrong, or simply use too much, and you produce exactly the same sticky-pawl symptom you were trying to fix.

One forum case illustrates it: a 7750 that auto-wound reliably before a service began failing frequently afterwards, and the reported cause was 9010 used in place of the specified product. That's a single bench report rather than a study — but the mechanism is well understood, and it points at something worth knowing: a spinning rotor that appears immediately after a service is more likely to be the service than the watch.

On vintage movements, expect it as standard. The ETA 2483/2484 in a 7016 or 7021 Submariner shares this architecture, and on any example that's gone 15+ years without attention, gummed reversers are close to guaranteed. Documented techniques for these include V105, or 9010 heavily cut with naphtha at roughly 1:25. Watchmakers also report that applying epilame (Fixodrop) to the reverser bearing surfaces improves power reserve on this family.


What to ask your watchmaker

Say this: "The rotor spins when I hand-wind it. I've measured manual power reserve at [X] hours against a spec of [Y]. Please check the reversing wheels and tell me whether you're cleaning or replacing them, and what lubricant you're using."

That sentence tells a good watchmaker you know what you're looking at, and it makes the vague ones visibly uncomfortable.

Then, when you get it back: run the hand-wind test again in the shop, before you pay. One Black Bay owner on the Rolex forums needed three separate service attempts before this was permanently fixed. If the rotor still spins, the job isn't done.


What this isn't

It isn't rotor noise. A rotor you can hear whirring when you shake the watch is usually normal — that's a separate post. This fault is specifically about rotor movement while you are turning the crown.

It isn't your lifestyle. That's the value of Test 2. If manual reserve is to spec and the watch still dies in daily wear, "you don't move enough" isn't the answer. There is one honest exception: a 7750 with its one-directional winding, on a genuinely sedentary owner, can underperform without being broken.

It isn't urgent. Unlike a grinding crown or water in the case, a slipping reverser isn't damaging anything. It's an efficiency problem. Wind it by hand each morning and book the service when it suits you.
