Rotor Noise: Normal, or Stop Wearing It Today?

You hold your new Black Bay to your ear, tilt it, and hear a whirring, spinning, faintly rattly noise. You go online. You find hundreds of other people asking the same question, half the replies saying "totally normal," the other half saying "get it serviced," and no resolution anywhere.

Tudor publishes nothing about expected movement noise. Neither does Rolex. Authorised dealers routinely pass rotors that owners find objectionable. This is why the argument never ends.

Here's the good news: while loudness is genuinely subjective and contested, there are three discriminators that reliably separate "normal" from "get that looked at." None of them involve deciding how loud is too loud.


Why your Tudor whirs in the first place

Modern Tudor Manufacture calibres use a tungsten monobloc rotor riding on ball bearings — the MT54 family (BB58, BB54, Ranger 39, Pelagos 39) runs seven ball bearings around the rotor mounting.

Ball-bearing rotors sound different from the plain sleeve-bearing rotors in older Rolex calibres. Finer, higher-pitched, a bit dry and "zippy." It's the bearing design, not a fault. As one long-standing Rolex Forums member put it: "Tudor Caliber MT5652 has a ball-bearing rotor and when placed near ear will sound a little noisy compared to the sleeve type rotor."

Some movements are simply loud by design. The Valjoux 7750 in a Big Block, a Tiger Woods Prince chronograph, or a Fastrider produces a distinct wobble and audible rumble when the rotor spins counter-clockwise — its non-winding direction. Both Monochrome and Gear Patrol describe this as a signature characteristic of the calibre. It is not a service indication.

And there's a widely-quoted line on the forums that's worth repeating because it's basically right: "It's quite normal — start worrying when you don't hear it."


How to self-test: the three discriminators

Forget volume. Ask these three questions instead.

1. Is it a whirr or a scrape?

Character is the single best indicator. Quiet room, no fan, no TV. Hold the watch 2–5 cm from your ear and try four movements:

  • The steering-wheel rotation. Hold it dial-up and rotate slowly in the plane of the dial, back and forth. The rotor swings through its arc.
  • The gravity tilt. Slowly tilt it through 90° so the rotor falls under its own weight. Listen to the fall and to how it stops.
  • The swirl. Swirl it in a horizontal circle so the rotor spins continuously and then coasts down.
  • A light tap on the caseband with a fingertip.

2. Is it louder in one position than the other?

Hold the watch dial-up and give the caseband a very light tap. Then repeat dial-down.

If a rattle is markedly louder in one position than the other, that points to a loose rotor contacting the caseback. That's a real fault, and an urgent one.

Even, symmetrical sound in both positions is reassuring.

3. Does the rotor spin while you hand-wind?

Unscrew the crown, hand-wind slowly, and watch the rotor. On a healthy movement it sits still.

If it spins while you're winding, that's not a noise question at all — that's worn or gummed reversing wheels, and the watch won't be holding its charge properly either. It's a well-documented, cheap, routine fix, but it's a different problem with a different answer.


The rule that beats all three

A change from how your watch used to sound is far more diagnostic than absolute loudness.

Which means the most useful thing you can do is establish a baseline now, while the watch is healthy. Do the four movements above in a quiet room, note what you hear, and repeat it monthly. A rotor that's got noticeably louder or changed character over six months is telling you something. A rotor that's always sounded like that since day one probably isn't.


When to stop wearing it immediately

Metallic scraping or a loose-object rattle means stop today.

The reason is specific and worth understanding. A rotor rubbing against the caseback or a bridge is generating metal particles inside a lubricated mechanism. Those particles get carried through the movement by the oil. It's the watch equivalent of running an engine with a loose bolt rattling around inside it.

The repair escalates fast — from "replace a bearing," which is cheap and routine, to "replace the movement," which is not.

Same logic for a sharp clack or tink: something is loose in there. A screw, the rotor itself, or a detached component. Every minute of wear is another chance for it to find somewhere expensive to lodge.


The solution

If it's a normal whirr: nothing. Enjoy the watch. Note the baseline so you'd notice a change.

If it's a gritty rumble or the rotor won't coast: book a service. Not urgent, but don't leave it a year.

If it's scraping, clacking, or asymmetric between positions: stop wearing it and get it in.

The repair itself

On a modern MT calibre: inside the five-year guarantee, this is a warranty conversation. Bring your positional-tap observation with you — it's more useful to a technician than "it's noisy."

On an ETA-based Tudor: the 2824-2 rotor bearing is a catalogued ETA part (#1497, part number 22.040.00) and is separately replaceable with a staking tool — typically a low-double-figures part. It's a routine, established repair, not a movement replacement.

On a vintage 2776/2783/2784 Tudor (Submariner 94010, 94110, Ranger 90200): a worn rotor ball bearing is a commonly reported fault on examples of this age. The diagnostic tell is a wobbly, noisy rotor that doesn't quiet down when you tighten the rotor screw.

There's an encouraging lead here, though it needs the right caveat. One owner's Rolex AD reported they could not get the ball bearing for this ETA series through Tudor's parts inventory. A forum member then measured both his 2784 bearing and an ETA 2824-2 bearing with calipers, got 5.55 mm for both, and successfully fitted the 2824-2 part — which is still in current production.

That's a single unreplicated bench report from one poster, and an outside-diameter measurement doesn't by itself establish that bore and height match. So treat it as a lead worth asking your watchmaker to verify, not as a part number to order on. If it holds up for your movement, it substantially de-risks a repair that Tudor can't supply parts for.

Best practice on a vintage Tudor: buy a complete generic ETA rotor, transfer the bearing into your original Tudor-signed rotor, and keep the signed rotor in the watch. Forum consensus strongly favours this over fitting an unsigned ETA rotor, for obvious reasons about originality and value.


A note on the argument

If you take this to an authorised dealer and they tell you it's normal, they may well be right — and they may also be applying a standard you don't share. There is no published spec for acceptable rotor noise from Tudor, Rolex, or anyone else. That's a genuine gap, not a conspiracy.

Which is why the three discriminators above are worth more than the argument. "It sounds loud to me" is contestable. "It scrapes through one part of the arc," "it rattles louder dial-up than dial-down," or "the rotor spins when I hand-wind" are observations a technician has to engage with.
