The 70-Hour Power Reserve That Isn't
You take the watch off Friday night. You pick it up Monday morning. It's stopped.
Seventy hours should get you from Friday evening to Monday evening with room to spare. So either the marketing is a lie, or your watch has a problem.
Both are possible. But before you conclude either, there are three things to check that resolve the majority of these complaints — and one spec change that catches out a lot of recent buyers.
Start here: your watch might not be a 70-hour watch
Tudor quietly changed the number.

The "-U" suffix does not tell you the number. Four of the METAS calibres — MT5400-U, MT5450-U, MT5652-U and MT5662-2U — are 65 hours. But the MT5602-U in the Black Bay Ceramic is METAS-certified and still 70. Read the row, not the suffix.
The practical upshot: if you bought a BB58 GMT in 2024 or a refreshed BB58 in 2026 and you've been measuring against 70 hours, you're testing against a number that doesn't apply to your watch.
There's an upside: METAS independently verifies the manufacturer's stated power reserve as part of certification. So 65 isn't a marketing figure — it's a tested one.
The three things that explain most complaints
1. You almost certainly aren't winding it fully
This is the number one cause, by a wide margin.
Owners are told "you shouldn't hand-wind an automatic." That's not true, and it produces a specific failure mode: people give the crown 20 or 30 turns, assume the watch is full, and then measure a "power reserve" that started at 60%.
A full wind on an MT calibre takes roughly 60 crown turns. That figure comes from owners rather than from Tudor — Tudor publishes no number — but it's consistent across many independent reports, and it's a lot more than most people do. Since under-winding is the number one source of bad power reserve measurements, err high.
You will not feel a hard stop. The slipping bridle inside the barrel disengages at full tension and the crown just keeps turning with a subtly different, smoother feel. You cannot overwind an automatic this way. Keep going until the feel changes and then a bit more.
2. Seventy hours is measured from full wind
This is just arithmetic, but it catches people out.
You wear the watch Friday. It's a desk day, you're not especially active, and the rotor tops the mainspring up to maybe 40% of capacity. You take it off Friday at 7 pm.
40% of 70 hours is 28 hours. It stops around midnight on Saturday.
The watch has done nothing wrong. It just didn't start the weekend where you assumed it did. If you want a genuinely full weekend of standing time, hand-wind it before you put it down.
3. The spec word is "approximately"
Tudor says "approximately 70 hours." Manufacturer figures are best-case: fresh lubricants, ideal conditions, a specific test position. A watch delivering 63–65 hours against a 70-hour claim is comfortably within normal variance.
How to self-test properly
If you've accounted for all three of the above and still think something's wrong, here's how to get a number you can actually rely on.
- Take the watch off. Winding on-wrist side-loads the stem.
- Let it run down completely first. You want a clean zero, not a guess.
- Unscrew the crown and keep it in the fully pushed-in winding position.
- Hand-wind clockwise, slowly and smoothly, about 60 turns. Half-turn strokes are fine.
- Log the exact time. This is your T0.
- Set it dial-up on a surface that will not be disturbed. Not a desk you type at. Not near a washing machine. Not where a cat can reach it. Every bump turns the rotor and adds wind, which quietly invalidates the whole test. Even heavy footsteps on a wooden floor count.
- Screw the crown back down so the case stays sealed and the stem isn't loaded.
- Catch the stop time precisely. Best method: prop up an old phone recording a time-lapse at one frame per 30 seconds, pointed at the dial. You'll get the stop moment to the second. Otherwise check hourly from T0 + 60 hours.
- Power reserve = stop time − T0.
- Run it twice. One measurement is a data point, not a diagnosis.
The seven ways this test goes wrong
- Not actually fully wound — the big one.
- Counting from when you took the watch off rather than from a known full wind.
- Testing in a vertical position (lower amplitude, earlier stop). Dial-up is the standard.
- The watch getting nudged.
- Treating "approximately 70 hours" as a guarantee.
- Testing once.
- Reading the spec for the wrong calibre — see the table above. And note that a pre-2016 ETA-based Black Bay is a 38-to-42-hour watch (ETA has published both figures for the 2824-2 over the years). It is not broken; it's a different generation.
Reading your result

That last row is the most useful line in this post. Your own earlier measurement is a far better benchmark than any published spec, because it controls for your specific watch, your method, and your environment. Measure it now while it's healthy, write it down, and you'll have something meaningful to compare against in three years.
Is it winding, or is it you?
If manual reserve tests fine but the watch keeps dying in real wear, the automatic winding system is the suspect — not the mainspring.
The swirl test: let the watch run down completely, don't touch the crown, hold it flat in your palm and swirl it in a horizontal circle like swirling a wine glass, about two rotations per second. A healthy automatic starts within a handful of swirls. Count 50 — it should be running. Continue to 200 total, set it dial-up, and see how long it runs.
The three-day wear test is cleaner evidence: fully hand-wind, wear it for three consecutive days, then take it off at a known time and let it run down. A working automatic continually tops off the mainspring, so remaining reserve should be at or near full spec.
Deciding between "sedentary owner" and "broken watch":

If you own a winder, set it to 650 turns per day, bidirectional for Tudor — all MT calibres wind bidirectionally, whatever you may have read.
When it's actually a fault
There are documented cases, and they follow a pattern.
- A BB58 owner: "consistently runs down in about 58–60 hours," then "at best 53 hours" after several months.
- A BB58 bought in June 2020: after eight months, running −3 s/day with power reserve measured at 51–52 hours. Rolex Service Center New York replaced the entire movement with a refurbished unit under warranty. Ten-day turnaround.
- Multiple Pelagos (MT5612) owners reporting watches stopping overnight despite regular wear, returned under warranty.
- A brand-new Tudor Ranger that stopped on day three, repeatedly died at around 68 hours, and was eventually replaced outright.
The common thread is a declining trend, or stopping while worn daily. That's what separates a real fault from a measurement problem. A single reading of 60 hours means very little. Going 70 → 60 → 52 over eighteen months means something.
The solution when it is real: warranty claim. Tudor's guarantee is five years on anything sold since 2020. The guarantee attaches to the stamped guarantee card rather than to a registered owner, and is widely understood to travel with the watch — but Tudor's published terms don't say so explicitly, so confirm with the retailer before relying on it for a pre-owned purchase. Note also that Tudor tends to swap the whole movement rather than repair it — RSC New York told one owner the swap was "more efficient and cost-effective." Some owners dislike this because the movement serial number changes, breaking the link to the original COSC-certified unit. Worth knowing before you send it.
The honest summary
Power reserve shortfall complaints on MT calibres are real and recurring, but they read as individual movement faults handled by warranty replacement — not a design flaw. There's no evidence of a batch problem, no recall, and no pattern in production dates.
Most of the time: wind it properly, check which calibre you actually own, measure over two clean runs, and the number comes out fine.
